    Spreading Speed, Traveling Waves, and Minimal Domain Size in\ud Impulsive Reaction-diffusion Models

    How growth, mortality, and dispersal in a species affect the species’ spread and persistence constitutes a central problem in spatial ecology. We propose impulsive reaction-diffusion equation models for species with distinct reproductive and dispersal stages. These models can describe a seasonal birth pulse plus nonlinear mortality and dispersal throughout the year. Alternatively they can describe seasonal harvesting, plus nonlinear birth and mortality as well as dispersal throughout the year. The population dynamics in the seasonal pulse is described by a discrete map that gives the density of the populationat the end stage as a possibly nonmonotone function of the density of the population at the beginning of the stage. The dynamics in the dispersal stage is governed by a nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation in a bounded or unbounded domain. We develop a spatially explicit theoretical framework that links species vital rates (mortality or fecundity) and dispersal characteristics with species’ spreading speeds, traveling wave speeds, as well as and minimal domain size for species persistence. We provide an explicit formula for the spreading speed in terms of model parameters, and show that the spreading speed can be characterized as the slowest speed of a class of traveling wave solutions. We also determine an explicit formula for the minimal domain size using model parameters. Our results show how the diffusion coefficient, and the combination of discrete- and continuous-time growth and mortality determine the spread and persistence dynamics of the population in a wide variety of ecological scenarios.     A renewed search for water maser emission from Mira variables

    There is an approximately 60% detection rate for 1612 MHz masers in association with red, color-selected IRAS sources, though few are detected from the bluer circumstellar shells of Mira variables. On the other hand and complementarily, past, pre-IRAS 22 GHz surveys detected many water masers in association with Mira variables.     Allee Effects May Slow the Spread of Parasites in a Coastal Marine Ecosystem

    Allee effects are thought to mediate the dynamics of population colonization, particularly for invasive species. However, Allee effects acting on parasites have rarely been considered in the analogous process of infectious disease establishment and spread. We studied the colonization of uninfected wild juvenile Pacific salmon populations by ectoparasitic salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) over a 4-year period. In a data set of 68,376 fish, we observed 85 occurrences of precopular pair formation among 1,259 preadult female and 613 adult male lice. The probability of pair formation was dependent on the local abundance of lice, but this mate limitation is likely offset somewhat by mate-searching dispersal of males among host fish. A mathematical model of macroparasite population dynamics that incorporates the empirical results suggests a high likelihood of a demographic Allee effect, which can cause the colonizing parasite populations to die out. These results may provide the first empirical evidence for Allee effects in a macroparasite. Furthermore, the data give a rare detailed view of Allee effects in colonization dynamics and suggest that Allee effects may dampen the spread of parasites in a coastal marine ecosystem

    Dynamical matrix of two-dimensional electron crystals

    In a quantizing magnetic field, the two-dimensional electron (2DEG) gas has a rich phase diagram with broken translational symmetry phases such as Wigner, bubble, and stripe crystals. In this paper, we derive a method to get the dynamical matrix of these crystals from a calculation of the density response function performed in the Generalized Random Phase Approximation (GRPA). We discuss the validity of our method by comparing the dynamical matrix calculated from the GRPA with that obtained from standard elasticity theory with the elastic coefficients obtained from a calculation of the deformation energy of the crystal.Comment: Revised version published in Phys.     Public hospital costs and quality in the Dominican Republic

    Measuring costs in public hospitals in developing countries is hampered by the lack of an appropriate costing system, or of any systematic cost accounting. Invoices for goods and services, prices for inputs, and patient records are generally absent. As a result, cost measures have historically been based on budget figures - the only available financial data. But budget allocations bear little relationship to the resources actually required to provide services to hospital patients. The patient-based methodology described by the authors circumvents this problem by measuring actual hospital resources allocated to patients. Their study was conducted in a single Dominican hospital during a one week period in April 1989. Their approach documents and gives prices for goods, services, and personnel time provided by the hospital to emergency patients, inpatients, and outpatients. They used the following to measure quality and efficiency: (a) the qualifications and relative costs of medical manpower delivering services; (b) the extent and nature of shortages; (c) comparisons of physician orders and actual services provided; and (d) (for selected diagnoses) the specifics of clinical practices in the hospital, compared with accepted clinical norms for the Dominican Republic. They found that average and total costs of services understate the true costs - because of shortages, inappropriate and underused personnel, and nonfunctioning equipment. Quality of care measures suggest low quality and poor efficiency. Norms of medical practice were not followed in more than 80 percent of the cases examined. Rates of completion for diagnostic tests were below 50 percent for outpatient services and between 60 and 70 percent for inpatient and emergency services. The study registered significant monthly savings of 641fornoncompletionoftestsand641 for noncompletion of tests and 824 for nonavailability of drugs. Policy recommendations of the authors center on the need to reform the organization and delivery of health care as well as physician payment practices - and to giving more authority to hospital administrators. To make Dominican hospitals more efficient, there must be greater authority and accountability for hospital directors and better incentives for improving medical and management performance.     Barrierless procedure for substitutionally doping graphene sheets with boron atoms: ab initio calculations

    Using ab initio methods, we propose a simple and effective way to substitutionally dope graphene sheets with Boron. The method consists of selectively exposing each side of the graphene sheet to different elements. We first expose one side of the membrane to Boron, while the other side is exposed to Nitrogen. Proceeding this way, the B atoms will be spontaneously incorporated into the graphene membrane, without any activation barrier. In a second step, the system should be exposed to a H-rich environment, that will remove the CN radical from the layer and form HCN, leading to a perfect substitutional doping.Comment: Accepted Physical Review

    Hox Genes Regulate Muscle Founder Cell Pattern Autonomously and Regulate Morphogenesis Through Motor Neurons

    The differentiation of myoblasts to form functional muscle fibers is a consequence of interactions between the mesoderm and ectoderm. The authors examine the role of segment identity in directing these interactions by studying the role of Hox genes in patterning adult muscles in Drosophila. Using the `four-winged fly' to remove Ultrabithorax function in the developing adult, the authors alter the identity of the ectoderm of the third thoracic segment towards the second and show that this is sufficient to inductively alter most properties of the mesoderm—myoblast number, molecular diversity, and migration pattern—to that of the second thoracic segment. Not all aspects of myogenesis are determined by the segment identity of the ectoderm. The autonomous identity of the mesoderm is important for choosing muscle founder cells in the correct segmental pattern. The authors show this by removal of the function of Antennapedia, the Hox gene expressed in the mesoderm of the third thoracic segment. This results in the transformation of founder cells to a second-thoracic pattern. The authors also report a role for the nervous system in later aspects of muscle morphogenesis by specifically altering Ultrabithorax gene expression in motor neurons. Thus, ectoderm and mesoderm segment identities collaborate to direct muscle differentiation by affecting distinct aspects of the process
